The Problem
Anne Arundel County Public Schools had purchased access to the web-based video editing software WeVideo for all students. However, most of the staff or students were not utilizing the program.
The Solution
I analyzed the situation and offered the following solutions:
A simple “How to use WeVideo” course would be developed and available to learners on the district’s Learning Management System - Brightspace. It was important that this course would offer the basics: how to log in and add stock video, text, and sound to a project.
My Process
Backmapping
To start this process, I looked at the steps required to create a video made up of stock video clips. I determined the steps were:
Log into the district website and learner management system (LMS)
Open up the program
Start a new video project
Import stock video
Import stock audio
Edit stock video and audio to the correct length
Finalize and export the video.
Planning / Prototype
I then determined what audiovisual elements would be included in each portion of the lesson. For usability, I choose to limit the length of the mini-lessons to less than 3 minutes each. I included a check for understanding and the ability to repeat each section of the lesson as needed.
Full Development
I then recorded the video and took the images for the final project. When all visual aspects of the project were ready, I developed the project in Rise360. Upon completion, I uploaded the SCORM file to the district’s LMS.
Implementation and Evaluation
The final project was implemented at three educational sites, and I then introduced the project to the learners. Individuals reported an appreciation of the micro-learning aspect of this project and reported going back multiple times to review steps.
The evaluation of the success of this project is based on individual case studies and eye-witness reports. Based on these results, the project successfully increased the usage of WeVideo.
